Subject: Change for Middle School
The middle school faculty and administration at Rosehill Christian School is committed to providing excellence in education as an extension of the Christian home. We strive to provide rigor, relevance and relationships in the academic, spiritual, and extra-curricular pursuits of your children. Whenever we recognize a need to improve our students' growth and achievement, we put our heads together professionally to come up with a solution that is best for students.
For example, last school year I had a concern about our middle school students being in Math on a block schedule. This only allowed for them to have Math 2 or 3 days per week. After evaluating the problem, I decided that in order to do what was best for students, (in this case it was Math every day of the week) we changed the master schedule and provided that for our students at mid-year.
This year, we have gone to a "straight schedule" where middle school students attend all of their classes every day of the week. This has helped us as we transition our focus from students merely memorizing facts to their becoming problem solvers who can make application of the materials covered. The middle school curriculum is challenging, our instruction is engaging, and our expectations are high. However, the current schedule presents a dilemma. Because of the length of classes, the time limits of our school day and the requirement of our accreditation organization to offer electives in the middle school, we had no time this year for a study lab every day in the schedule.
The Bible declares that in the multitude of counsel, there is wisdom. Our teachers are wise and when we come together to solve a problem and do what is best for students, we can usually arrive at where we need to be.
Therefore, beginning next week, every Tuesday and Thursday, our students will have a study lab during their scheduled Bible class time. Since we have chapel on Thursday, and Bible class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, this will allow us to still cover our Bible curriculum while providing some support to our 6th through 8th grade students with a study lab for 2 days per week.
I have also been investigating the amount of homework that our middle school students have. I have met with our middle school staff to discuss homework, we have talked about the purposes and amounts of homework that are appropriate for middle school students and what is needed to support a rigorous academic program, and we have discussed additional ways to support our students. I have also visited with students to talk about their homework assignments and their perceptions of what has been required thus far. What I sense for the most part is that students are wanting to do a good job, but sometimes they feel overwhelmed. Providing the study lab should help to alleviate this problem. Moreover, we will continue to monitor their assignments and work loads to ensure the proper balance of rigor and support.
At the first of the year, we set up a test schedule for middle school so that they would not be loaded with a number of tests on one day. That schedule is listed below. However, please note that tests and quizzes are not the same thing. When teachers give a quiz, they are assessing what the students recall from homework, what they may have read or what they were taught over a short period of time. Quizzes are not tests. All quizzes are added to come up with a major test grade at the end of each 9 week grading period. Therefore, students may have quizzes at any time.
Hopefully, this helps our students and provides you with the information that you need to support your child. Remember that we will always do what we believe is best for students.

Chapel
Last week's chapel speaker was Lance Waldie – Senior Pastor at Harvest Bible Church off of Mueschke.
Pastor Waldie is senior pastor at Harvest Bible Church which he helped plant back in November 2000. Pastor Waldie is also an adjunct professor at the College of Biblical Studies (www.cbshouston.edu) where he teaches Bible exposition and theology. He has been married to Cheryl since June of 1993, and he is the proud father of Daniel and Brooke. Pastor Waldie is a 2000 graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas where he received his master of theology degree. He also received his BA in sociology (1991) and his MA in counseling (1994) from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Pastor Waldie enjoys playing golf, softball, basketball, reading books, and laughing at slap-stick humor. He's an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, gets annoyed during worthless meetings, hates working out, loves Christ's church, and loves to wrestle on the ground with his kids. His motivating Bible verse is 2 Timothy 4:2 "Preach the Word. Do it in season and out of season. Correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and careful instruction."
Yesterday, Pastor Danny Crocker, of The Way Church, spoke to us about missions and serving for Christ. Danny told the students about his mission oppurtunities and experiences as well as a slide show presentation. He told them how to get involved and encouraged them to serve others. He is the husband, to Lizanne, our Librarian and PreK 3 teacher, and dad to Christian (8th), Hannah (7th), and Micah (4th)
